Peppers are here! Many of you, like myself, have been wondering about peppers this year. They are finally starting to come in. This week we will have three varieties: bells, bullhorns, and yellow peppers. None are hot. In a week or two we should get some jalapenos and banana peppers for fans of the hot varieties.
Jeff got about 3 inches of rain on Friday, and what a blessing for the harvest. Cucumbers and squash are slowing down, but as long as the rain keeps coming, will take a while to disappear altogether. Tomatoes are starting to come in strong, and if you’re like me, you just can’t get enough. Cantaloupes are almost ready, and watermelons are growing fast.
With so much abundance, you can almost forget that we are about 12 inches behind in our rainfall. Jeff’s farm gets more rain than Nashville does, but the dry weather has taken its toll. Eggplants have failed this year, and Jeff has had to resort to watering the fields a few times this season to keep everything going.
How about those purple beans? Jeff got the seeds from a man in his nineties who asked him to keep this “very old” heirloom variety alive. Anyone who has cooked them knows that they lose their purple color when cooked, but fortunately they are excellent raw!

The potluck is coming up on Sunday, and I hope most of you can make it up, but just in case, we decided to do it again. Sunday, August 26th will be the next potluck, and should correspond with an abundant harvest of ripe, juicy watermelons. There is nothing better on a hot, summer day. In fact, if you all respond positively to the idea, we would like to have a potluck every month until the end of the season!

The annual Biodynamic Conference this year will be on the weekend of September 28th-30th. Women In Agriculture is the theme for this year, and Jeff has some great workshops and lectures he is putting together. I’ll give more details and send/hand out a dedicated flier in a few weeks. In the meantime, mark the dates.

The rice situation is this, we will take orders for the 2.5 lb bags, but you can also organize groups to purchase and split a 25 lb bag. Buying in bulk is always cheaper. We ask your patience as we set up the rice line. I’ll keep you all informed.
