The Long Hungry Current 8/6/07
Delta Star Farms Biodynamic Rice- Thanks for bearing with me on the rice orders. I have placed all your orders, plus we will have a little extra available for those who have no email or just decided they should have ordered some. All told I ordered 150 pounds of rice! We can do this with some regularity, but the question remains, how often? I was thinking either once a month, or once every two months.
The order will not be here in time for Monday’s pick-up (8/6), as Maude expects to come through Nashville on Tuesday. So again I ask for your patience as this whole thing comes together. I will divide it up and bring it the following Monday (8/13).
Tomatoes are still picking up steam! We will continue to get the slicing variety, and soon we will get the Roma Tomatoes for sauces and drying. Marinara Sauce and dried tomatoes are two of my favorite things in the world, so I am happy.
Cucumbers and summer squash are slowing down fast, green beans are done (though Jeff did plant a fall crop), and the onions are starting to rot. When you get an onion with a soft spot on it, peel some of the skin off around the mushy part and let air in to dry it out and re-cure.
Melons will start arriving soon, and it looks like we will have a bumper crop of winter squashes this season. Chinese cabbage and Bok Choys are poking out of the ground now too.
Welcome Sage to the herb table. Most commonly used to flavor meat, especially pork, sage is great in soups and veggie dishes too. Sage also has plenty of medicinal uses... * Sage is used internally to treat indigestion and flatulence. * It is also used to reduce excessive lactation in nursing mothers and night sweats (especially in menopause), excessive salivation, profuse perspiration, anxiety, depression, female sterility and menopausal problems. * It also has supportive properties for the liver and is used to boost the functionality of the liver. * Externally, it can be used for insect bites, throat, mouth, gum and skin infections. * It contains rosmarinic acid that has good antioxidant properties, which are reinforced by the picrosalvin also found in sage. * Furthermore it has antimicrobial and antiviral effects and is often used in hair care to combat greasy and oily hair by regulating the sebum production of the scalp. It is used to treat various skin problems, such as acne. --Alan
